Task 3- Final Week

Task 3- Final Week

Last week was the final week to work on our assignment before the draft was due.
Lydia and I made a lot of progress when it came to adding information onto our teacher and student resources pages and home page.
We have had a lot of problems with group work. While Lydia and I have been proactive in our approach to this task, I have found that Grace has been unwilling to put in time and effort to contribute. There has been many attempts to contact her but the emails have gone unanswered. The deadlines that we have set as a group have not been met by Grace and I am slightly disappointed at how much effort she has put in compared to us. She did end up completing week 4 and 5 of the lesson plan which was very helpful!
I have learnt that we need to begin making a big dent in group assignments when we are first given them to allow for problems that may arise and that may take a little while to solve. I have also learnt that on the first day of making our group, we needed to exchange all contact details including phone numbers and email addresses as sometimes email addresses are not enough to get in contact with someone. We also needed to divide the task up more evenly amongst the members, though it was hard as Grace was not available at the times we were meeting up.

Lydia and I have worked on the presentation that we must embed on our site. Lydia went home and made a start on the powerpoint slides and then sent it to me. I then wrote notes and changed a few things on the slides, saved it and sent it back to her with my changes that had been made. This worked out very well and I felt that it was a good way of working through this section of the task. I have emailed Grace with the details of what will be included in the presentation including information about how she only completed weeks 4 and 5 of the lesson plan.
Lydia and I decided that using Powerpoint and then making a Jing screencast would be the best way to present our video. Lydia narrated the screencast and has supplied a link on our wikispace. She did message to say that she had trouble embedding the file on our page but I found a link that will hopefully help! http://classroomk12.wikispaces.com/Embed+Jing+Video (This is the link that I sent Lydia).

I have completed my two peer reviews of two other groups’ wiki spaces. For one of the reviews I found that the groups idea was well chosen and thought about, but their wiki page was a little disorganised and all over the place. I am sure that they will sort all of it out by the due date on Friday. I found that I had a lot of things that I could write about and there were many points at which I could give constructive criticism.
The second group’s wiki was wonderful! It was very informative and relevant. I enjoyed looking through each of their pages and looking at their ideas and thought processes. It was very professional and helpful for teachers!

The next step in completing this assignment, is for each member of my group to submit their own cover page and marking rubric. Keeping in mind that all members of the group will receive the same mark.

I have included a screenshot of our wiki’s homepage. It is not the complete homepage, but it will give you an idea of what our wikispace looks like.

I hope you have enjoyed travelling with me on this journey through teaching and learning with technology. It has been very interesting and challenging for me but I have enjoyed this EDN113 unit very much.

Task 3- Progress

In Tuesday’s lecture Jenni went into detail about different ways that we could present our video describing our teacher resource and how we worked together as a group. At this point, I personally think that Authorstream would be a good presentation tool. Though when speaking about this with Lydia (one of my group members), using a screencasting technology such as Jing might be a good idea as well. We are not at the stage where we will be making our 5 minute presentation but it is something that we need to think about.

During the past couple of weeks we have had some trouble getting together as a group to work on our assignment. In this weeks workshop on Wednesday morning we made some progress. We have created our groups wiki using Wiki Spaces and have made some great progress. I have completed the key notes on how our task is authentic as well as expanding on information about various extension activities.

Lydia has been working very hard on the Home Page and finding lots of different resources to help students. Grace has been asked to complete the lesson plan and have it up on the wiki site by tomorrow so hopefully that will be ready to go.

The draft for this task is to be completed by Monday the 13th of May. I believe that we will have the majority of the assignment complete leaving the rest of the week for minor fix-ups so it can be submitted finally on Friday the 17th of May. I have enjoyed working on this assignment. It has been an interesting process thinking about what teachers could do to help make children’s learning as authentic as possible. I hope to learn from other groups’ wiki pages and maybe even apply them to my classroom when I am a qualified teacher

Feel free to visit Our Wiki page to see our ideas and what we have completed so far. There is still a long way to go but we are making progress!

Task 3- Brainstorming

Task 3- Brainstorming

On Friday, Lydia and I met up at uni to start brainstorming ideas for our assignment. I found that we achieved a lot and have gained a clearer idea of what this assignment is asking of us. We have decided to do natural disasters as our topic. To make this decision, we looked on Scootle and clicked on the Science link that showed us a number of resources for different topics. We found natural disasters interesting.
Our brainstorm included deciding on how long the project would run for, which types of technologies the students could use and whether it was an individual or group assignment. We have decided on a 6 week program, youtube, blogging and general internet access as their technologies and completing the assignment in a group. Our teaching group will be years 6 and 7. We worked out the teaching group by looking on the curriculum council app that I had downloaded on my phone. The image I have included shows how the app looks on my phone. The year 6 and 7 curriculum allows the students to explore why something happens, rather than just explaining an event.
We also began breaking each week down to work out what the students would be doing each class. We did not get very far with this because we had not worked out WHY learning about natural disasters is authentic and relevant and WHAT they will learn.

We will all have to now work out what the students will gain from doing this project.

Week 9- Task 3

Week 9- Task 3

In Tuesday’s lecture we discussed Task 3. We have been instructed to plan an authentic learning project that students can do where they will use technology of some kind to create a product. The technologies that the students can use could be anything! From movies, to websites, to digital storytelling, photo collections and presentations. The number of technologies that can be employed in the classroom as learning tools is amazing! We discussed some major points that must be addressed in this task. The target audience is not the students, but the teachers! We are providing advice to other teachers on how to include technology in the classroom. The task that we set for the students must extend over several lessons and it must be Authentic. An authentic task is a task that has real world relevance. Where a child can complete the task, and make connections that are relevant to them and the world around them.

In our groups in the tutorial on Wednesday, we had to decide on a teaching area of interest, like we did in Task 2. I am in a group with Grace and Lydia. Grace was not at the tutorial but Lydia and I have chosen to do Science. We are in the same groups as we were for Task 2 and have chosen Science again. I have been in contact with Grace to inform her of our choices. We are yet to decide on an educational topic of interest within the topic of Science.
For this week, we are all going to brainstorm some ideas for what we could do for our topic. We then plan to meet up next week during the teaching free week to begin working on this task.

In the tutorial on Wednesday, Helen recommended that we register with Scootle. Scootle is a website that provides teachers with digital curriculum resources. Each subject in the curriculum is covered. It was very easy to register. Once registered I can access any resource that is on the site. I clicked on Science and it came up with a number of different topics. Click on this link to see what I have been looking at. http://www.scootle.edu.au/ec/browse?topic=Science. I have also been to the AppStore on my iPhone and downloaded the Curriculum Council App. On the Technology Toolbox website, there is a link that also takes you to the Curriculum Council website.

I am quite excited to work on this assignment in my group. I think it will be a great way to get some ideas on helpful and fun technology can be when used in the classroom.

Week 9- Finalised

Week 9- Finalised

Yesterday I redid my screencast. As I had previously mentioned in my other blog posts, I was not happy with the quality of information that I had included in my first screencast submission. I managed to embed my video on my webpage but as you can see from the image I have included in this post, the format is too big and so the viewer will be unable to see the full display of my screencast. To counteract this problem, I have also included a link that goes directly to my screencast where the viewer will be able to see the whole display.

Overall, I have enjoyed exploring the technologies of EndNote and screencasting. I will be sure to use EndNote throughout my studies at Murdoch.

Task 2- Tutorial Week 9

Task 2- Tutorial Week 9

In today’s tutorial we discussed how the peer reviews were going. In our group, we have had a lot of problems with peer reviewing within our group. My group members are Grace, Lydia and Ashli. Ashli emailed me on Monday and told me that she would not be able to complete the assignment as she was in hospital. With this information, I emailed Helen (Tutor), and asked for advice on how we would be able to complete the peer reviews. Helen replied and said that we would be joined with another group. Somehow, Grace was swapped with Amy-lee, so she was no longer in our group. Lydia and I have now had to review eachothers, Amy-lee’s and one other persons. Today we finalised and sorted all this out and I have completed all 3 of my peer reviews.

The photo I have included shows my screencast being downloaded to a http format. In my last blog post, I wrote about not being able to embed my screencast video onto my zoho site. I decided to try and add a annotated hyperlink on my site as well. I clicked on my sun at the top of the screen, clicked history, clicked on the ‘eye’ icon which allows me to view the screencast, and then clicked on the ‘share via screencast.com’. This downloaded and opened up a window with a http:// web address that I could hyperlink onto my webpage.

At this point, I will be making another screencast as I am not completely happy with the quality of the video.

Jing- creating my screencast

Jing- creating my screencast

This is the small sun that appeared at the top of my screen after downloading Jing. When you move your mouse over the top of the icon, there will be an option on the left called ‘Capture’. I clicked on this, selected the area that I wanted my viewers to see, clicked on the ‘capture video’ icon and the recording started within 3 seconds.
From there, I began creating my screencast. I found it very difficult to get it right the first time. I think I attempted about 4 times before I settled on my final screencast.
After completing the screencast, I found that there were details that I had forgotten to mention. These included changing the setting to APA 6th edition and mentioning that EndNote automatically puts an end text reference at the end of your document. I will need to redo my screencast to make sure I am completely happy with the standard.

I did experience a little bit of difficulty when adding my Jing screencast onto my Zoho website. Zoho has an embedding tool but I was not sure how to use it. I looked at Sample 1 on LMS and found information that pertained directly to working out my problem. Jenni had included information about a SWF element for embedding Jing videos. I completed this successfully but the video has extended out of view. I will add a link that explains why this occurs. http://jennip98eportfolio.zohosites.com/Researcher.html.
